SUMMARY

Once I had explored each of the 3 final concepts I settled on the revamped scrum-cap. This concept best meets the URS, providing added protection with the inclusion of sensors that can send information to a nearby physio and give immediate feedback to nearby players and ref, if he/she should leave the field of play for an immediate check up. The other concepts were simply diagnostics, whilst this one also provided some physical protection against serious head collisions. It provides a much lighter form of protection compared to a conventional scrum-cap, this is the area it suffers more compared to the other two concepts as they are both obviously lighter, however the lightweight materials utilised such as the weaved elasticene, and D3o providing lightweight instant protection. Concept 1 is leaps and bounds ahead of a conventional scrum-cap. It loses the strap related to conventional scrum-caps using a unique system of attachment, increasing the comfort of the product further. Removing the conventional strap and increasing the angular elements of the design also encourage it to not be looked at as a safety product, counter acting the ‘untouchable’ mentality any athlete has, thus increasing the likelihood of it being utilised in game situations.

The main thing that really attracted me to this idea was the fact that it wasn’t just a diagnostic, but twinned up as a physical protection against head collision. In my opinion making it the stand out concept to take forward into development.
